What makes a bike pannier rack so practical and essential?
A bike pannier rack is a useful accessory. Whether you’re going shopping or on your way to work, it should always be possible to stow your luggage securely on your bike. Bicycles are playing an increasing role in everyday life, being used more and more frequently as a means of transport.
While you’re riding, you need to be able to stow your luggage securely so that you don't lose anything on the way. Therefore, it’s essential to have a good, secure bike luggage carrier. It must also be well suited to its intended use.
Make sure you do your research before buying your pannier rack – the model you choose can affect the load capacity. The luggage you carry on your bike also has a significant impact on your balance. A pannier rack ensures even distribution of weight on the bicycle, which in turn has a major influence on steering performance.
Nowadays, the range of bike pannier racks available is extensive. Most bikes are already equipped with one, usually located behind the saddle. But is your pannier rack actually suitable for your needs? If not, you can retrofit your bicycle according to your specific requirements.
There are two main categories of bike pannier racks, namely:
- Front pannier racks
- Rear pannier racks
Front pannier racks
A pannier rack that is attached to the front of a bicycle, close to the handlebars, is also referred to as a front pannier rack. A front pannier rack is ideal for combining with a bike basket or crate.
Generally, the maximum load for these bicycle luggage carriers is 10 kg. These models, which are attached to the handlebars and the front axle, offer a space for baskets and bags, which in turn can be secured with straps or a special adapter. When carrying luggage at the front of the bike, it’s crucial to ensure that the weight is well distributed.
Weight distribution has an influence on the steering performance, potentially jeopardising safety in road traffic if handled poorly. A front pannier rack should only be used for transporting additional items of luggage, and never as the main luggage rack.
So-called low-rider luggage carriers are also available. Mounted low on the front wheel, they work well as front luggage carriers. One advantage of this type of pannier rack is that, due to its lower centre of gravity, it has less influence on the steering, which makes riding safer.
Rear pannier rack
Rear pannier racks are the classical type of bike pannier rack. As the name suggests, they are mounted over the rear wheel of the bike. They are usually made of aluminium and steel, because these materials have proven to be particularly reliable over time.
This type of bicycle pannier rack is standard on most bicycles. It is well suited for transporting large or heavy luggage. Most models can bear weights of up to 25 kg. Baskets and bags can be attached quickly and easily with the help of special bike luggage rack systems. These systems are equipped with an adapter that allows you to connect and secure the basket or bag.
For sporty bikes, there are special models that can be attached to the seat post. Most are made of carbon and can bear a maximum load of 15 kg.
This type of rack is suspended above the rear wheel, and there are no other points of contact. Most of these racks have a clamping device for easy attachment and removal. But watch out – suspended bike pannier racks always have a lower load capacity.
Mounting a child seat on the pannier rack
There’s nothing nicer than going on a cycling excursion with your child. But a child seat is also a practical solution in everyday life – for example, to get your child to nursery school.
Child seats can simply be mounted on the luggage rack, and depending on the manufacturer, they have a load-bearing capacity of up to 35 kg. Most child seats already have a built-in bracket for easy attachment and removal. You can connect the appropriate adapter to the pannier rack and then securely attach the child seat.
But watch out – it’s not permitted to transport passengers on the pannier rack itself! According to the Highway Code, you must not carry a passenger “unless your cycle has been built or adapted to carry one”. That means attaching a child seat, together with a device that provides protection from the spokes, in order to prevent accidents.
Load-bearing capacity
The main difference between front and rear pannier racks is their load-bearing capacity. A front bike pannier rack is suitable for small, compact luggage items of up 15 kg. The weight affects steering performance, which can significantly impact traffic safety.
So it’s better to transport heavy luggage on a rear pannier racks, which, depending on the manufacturer, can have a load-bearing capacity of up to 35 kg. Clear details of the load-bearing capacity are provided in the product descriptions of all manufacturers.
To choose the right bike luggage rack for you, pay attention to its range of application and load-bearing capacity.
